Cool Aeronautics

First launched in 2007, Cool Aeronautics is the Royal Aeronautical Society’s primary school outreach programme that aims to introduce children (between age 7 and 11) to the fascinating world and people of flying, aerospace engineering, and space  It’s the Society’s initiative to inspire the next generation by participating in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities and by encouraging them to join and create the future of aeronautics and aerospace industry.

The RAeS Heathrow Branch aims to organise the Cool Aeronautics events at our local community annually, through partnership with various local industry organisations, driving and promoting a sustainable future of the local aviation activities. It normally based around a day of aerospace themed talks and interactive workshops with Key Stage 2 primary school pupils, and held at aviation places of interest, such as British Airways Community Learning Centre etc.

2016 Cool Aeronautics Event Booklet

The Cool Aeronautics ‘format’ consists of a series of fun, interactive talks in the morning, delivered by aerospace and aviation professionals including airline and military pilots, space engineers and aeronautical engineers. These talks aim to introduce the children to the exciting world of science and engineering. Sometimes it includes a drama performance that brings back to life aviation stars from the past and present, such as Amy Johnson, Eugene Cernan and Svetlana Savitskaya. Afternoon activities include interactive workshops and personalised site tours. All children go home from a Cool Aeronautics event with a special goody bag containing aviation inspired contents which they can then share with their parents, siblings and friends.

In 2016, the Royal Aeronautical Society celebrates its 150th anniversary and Cool Aeronautics will form an integral part of these celebrations. To mark this occasion, the Society aimed to have Cool Aeronautics events reach 150 schools in 2016. With a theme of ‘150 Years of Aerospace Innovation and Inspirational People’, the Cool Aeronautics events held during this time will offer an informative and engaging celebration of Britain’s rich aviation heritage as well as look ahead to its exciting future.
