“Spitfire” and “Hurricane” Films now on general release at a cinema near you

“Spitfire” is an epic, sweeping tale of determination, vision and courage. It is the story of an aeroplane that was forged in competition, shaped as the war clouds gathered, and refined in the white heat of combat – going on to become the most famous fighter plane ever made. It includes te role of the Air Transport Auxiliary and includes superb air-to-air filming by John Dibbs. “Hurricane” (Squadron 303) is the story of a group of brave Poles who fought in the skies over England in WW2, not just to keep Great Britain free from the Nazis, but also to keep alive the very idea of their own country, which had existed in its modern form for barely twenty years before it was crushed between the opposing jaws of Germany and Russia. Equipped with the almost-obsolete Hurricane and (with some initial reluctance) given RAF blue uniforms, while they fought, Poland lived. “Hurricane” relies more on computer generated imagery (CGI) for the flying sequences.

Southampton – RAeS Solent Branch Lecture **

They’ve Arrived… F-35 Lightning II from production to RAF Marham. Presented by Lt Cdr Megan Ashton RN, Lt Cdr Ian McLaughlin RN, Lt Al Murphy RN, all of the Lightning II Delivery Team, Defence Equipment and Support. For the first lecture of the 2018/19 season the Solent Branch are delighted to be hosted once again by our friends and colleagues at HMS Sultan and the Royal Navy’s Air Engineering and Survival School. Long-time friends of the branch will recall that this is by no means the first lecture we have held on the F-35 since the Joint Strike Fighter project was first proposed, but surely none has come at a more poignant and exciting time. At last nine aircraft have touched down on UK soil to begin to form up the RAF’s first operational Squadron. By the date of the lecture flying trials should be well underway onboard HMS Queen Elizabeth, bringing big deck, fast jet operations back to the Royal Navy after many years. It has been a challenging journey to get to this stage. Lt Cdr Ashton and her colleagues from the MoD’s Lightning II Delivery Team will be taking a look at the magnitude and complexity of getting to where we are today. Please note that as HMS Sultan is a secure military establishment, advance registration is required for all attendees. If you wish to attend please supply your name, car registration, make and colour to solent@aerosociety.com by Friday 28th September. Directions to the venue can be found on our Lecture Locations page. 19:00 (doors at 18:00) HMS Sultan, Military Rd, Gosport PO12 3BY. cpd17 OCT 2018 | WEDNESDAY
Guildford – Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Farnborough & Guildford Lecture **

Electric Car Development – but is the future all electric? Sir John Samuel has been active in the battery and electric car arena for many years. One of the great challenges for engineers is to harness the energy of the sun through cost effective generation, transmission and storage – ultimately to power the wheels of mass transport. The roots of EV development came in the UK’s switch from horses to electric cars in 1915, now in 2018 history is repeating itself with rapid growth in electric passenger car production and sales enabled by major advances in Lithium based battery technology and high efficiency hybrid drivetrains. 19:30 – 21:00 University of Surrey, Guildford, GU2 7XH. cpd25 OCT 2018 | THURSDAY
Bournemouth – RAeS Christchurch Branch Lecture **

The keynote event for our 2018-2019 season is our biennial Sir Alan Cobham lecture, generously supported by Cobham plc. This year’s lecture will be on the Single European Sky (SES) project and will be given by Graham Lake. The lecture will discuss the political initiatives and challenges in harmonising the air traffic control systems, strategies and procedures across 42 European Countries, extending from Iceland to Turkey and beyond. SES respects the ICAO Global Air Navigation Plan, which the 192 government members of ICAO have signed up to deliver, and which for Europe has led to the European ATM Masterplan. Europe is generally very well advanced when compared to other global regions, partly because of Eurocontrol, the intergovernmental agency established 50+ years ago, but also because of the supranational political structure (the EC) that does not exist to the same extent elsewhere in the aviation world. The lecture will be preceded by a buffet reception for members and invited guests, which will be held in the atrium by main reception in Poole House. The reception will start at 6pm. 7pm for prompt lecture start at 7:30pm. Bournemouth University Poole House, Fern Barrow, Poole, Dorset BH12 5BB. This event may be used for anyone pursuing professional recognition, or further development, as evidence for your CPD records and we can provide a Certificate of Attendance. Contact Roger Starling e-mail rogerstarling593@btinternet.com or rogerstarling@me.com tel 01929 553822.

cpd30 OCT 2018 | TUESDAY
Yeovil – RAeS FAA Yeovilton Branch Lecture **

Tragedy in Paris by Capt John Hutchinson. An investigation by The Observer suggests the truth is much more complicated. In the words of John Hutchinson, a Concorde captain for 15 years, the fire on its own should have been “eminently survivable; the pilot should have been able to fly his way out of trouble.” The reason why he failed to do so, Hutchinson believes, was a lethal combination of operational error and negligence. This appears to have been a crash with more than one contributing factor, most of which were avoidable. 1800 for 1830 start. Nuffield Sports Centre RNAS Yeovilton, BA22 8HT. Lecture Secretary Lt Marc Stone RN 01935 456241.

Southampton – Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (CILT) Hampshire & Dorset Group Event

BREXIT : what happens if borders are restored? William (Bill) Packer, Managing Director, Steering Supply Chain Consultants Ltd. Whatever the type of BREXIT that is finally negotiated, if that involves a withdrawal from the customs union of the EU then both supply chains and transport operations between the UK and Europe face major change. The Steering Supply Chain Consultancy is already preparing its clients for those changes and now Bill Packer will be sharing some of that advice with CILT members who may still only be vaguely aware of what they mean. This is our season’s opening event and, despite it being held on Halloween, it promises to make the prospect of BREXIT ‘Deal or No Deal ?’ rather less frightening by showing how we can be ready to manage it beforehand. Refreshments will be provided. 18:30 (for 18:45) – 21:00. Solent Conference Centre (The Spark), on the East Park Terrace Campus of Southampton Solent University, Southampton SO 14 0LY Meeting Point: The Willow Conference Room (TS 315A on Level 3) of the Solent Conference Centre.
