He will be explaining the history of RAF display flying and the RAF air show displays from the beginnings in 1913 via the Red Pelicans, the Black Arrows, then finally right up to date with the techniques used by the current Red Arrows team. When Galaxies Collide by Professor Carolin Crawford (University of Cambridge). There is a whole Universe of galaxies out there, displaying a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colours. Carolin will be talking about those ‘peculiar’ galaxies that appear very different from their mainstream counterparts – galaxies which have been pulled together and then pulled apart by gravity to make some of the most spectacular deep sky objects. A Bristol Scout biplane will return to the Grade II Listed Flying Sheds at Larkhill for the first time in 103 years. The prototype Scout flew for the first time from Larkhill in February 1914 and no Bristol Scout has been seen there since. Scout C Serial No.1264, one of a batch produced in the Summer 1915, was recreated from three original parts kept as a souvenir by Flt Sub Lt F.D.H Bremner RNAS. She is the only airworthy Scout in the world today. This will also be a rare chance to see inside the historic Grade II listed flying sheds at Larkhill, which are normally closed to the public. To mark this unique occasion there will be a programme of engine runs, photoshoots, presentations and displays throughout the day telling the story of the Scout, its pilots, and the amazing recreation of this particular aircraft. 10.00am until 3.00pm Wood Road, Larkhill. This popular ‘Fly Navy’ airshow will showcase the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm; its current and future capabilities and historic accomplishments. The Air Station’s gates will be open to 40,000 visitors, just as they were 70 years ago, in 1947 at the first ever airshow at RNAS Yeovilton, providing the perfect opportunity to see our equipment and meet our personnel first hand. Over five hours of amazing flying displays and an extensive static display will feature historic naval aircraft and their modern-day counterparts in spectacular role demonstrations. UK and foreign military formation and solo display teams have also been invited to participate at the airshow.
